Dietary sulphate is inorganic and needs to be activated to be in an active form. Lots of people have problems activating sulphur.
Epsom salt baths are a simple way around this. Before you go to any naturo medicines or techniques try epsom salt baths.
A study that was conducted on healthy people, tested magnesium and sulphate levels before and after a bath. Blood magnesium level rises each time but the blood sulphate levels stop after a number of days. There is a finite amount of sulphur that the blood can hold. Once reached the body can not absorb anymore.
Dose: 4 cups of epsom salt per bath
The epsom salt baths is indicated for: pain, muscle aches, insomnia, all round sense of wellbeing,
If sulphation is still an issue after bathing, ask the client to get a DNApal test and analysis to identify genetic and enzymatic issues. Then refer to the herbs and nutrients below.
-
Molybdenum works really quickly. Take small amount for a week. Liquid and organic form is best. Naturopathic Doctor Greg Nigh recommends mozyme by biotic. I prefer liquid molybdenum. In my personal experience it worked after first dose.
-
Cayenne tincture. A few drops in a smoothie or water can change how hydrogen sulphite interacts with the cell, helping to reduce pain.
-
Korean red ginseng and panax ginseng lowers hydrogen sulphite becase it slows down the enzyme that breaks it down.
-
B12 in the form of oral or intramuscular hydroxcobalamin is used clinically for Hydrogen sulphite overdose. Consider this if genetic testing reveals that there is an issue with enzymes that break down sulphur.
Add Methylated form if there are neurological issues. Add adensyl form for mitochondria issues/ ATP production.
NB People with SIBO tend to have have high serum B12. Don’t be so concerned if supplementing. Serum B12 is super sensitive to supplementation. -
Butyrate is critical for healthy gut function. Greg Nigh recommends Biotic’s butyric cal mag. It helps to remove biofilm and balance candida and regulates genetic expression. It is the protective agent of soluble fibre, butyrate is produced to regulate gene expression and integrity of the gut. In systemic circulation it has the same regulation on all of our cells. It is regulating the expression of the genes responsible for building connective tissue. A vitally important and under appreciated nutrient.

Address iron cautiously. Iron metabolism need B2. Look at methylation issues too. Iron is mysterious in that our body has 5-6mg of iron in it total. Very small amounts. If people take supplements all the time and are still deficient then it is an absorption and a utilisation issue. Refer to DNA test results, look at relevant SNPs. You can’t supplement minerals in a high dose, manganese for example is dangerous high dose but low dose less than 10mg a day is adequate to bring iron up.
