Importance of Gut Health for Hormone Health and Neurotransmitters

Every naturopath preaches that gut health is crucial for overall well-being.

Today I’m going to talk specifically about HOW the gut regulates hormones and brain neurotransmitters.

The gut, often referred to as the “second brain,” houses the enteric nervous system (ENS). The ENS governs digestion and communicates with the central nervous system (CNS). This is the gut-brain axis; a two-way communication network that significantly influences both physical and mental health.

  1. The Estrobolome is a group of bacteria in the gut capable of metabolising and modulating levels of circulating oestrogen. One of the bacteria creates an enzyme called beta-glucuronidase, that breaksdown oestrogens into their active forms. This process helps prevent oestrogen dominance in men as well as women. The process also prevents deficiency, impacting menstrual health and reducing the risk of hormone-sensitive conditions such as PCOS, breast cancer.

  2. Cortisol: The gut produces hormones and signaling molecules, such as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and cholecystokinin (CCK), which influence appetite and stress responses. These hormones can affect the secretion of corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) from the hypothalamus, initiating the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis response to stress.

  3. Gut bacteria directly influences the HPA axis; which in tern effects the thyroid, causing weight imbalance and metabolic issues.

Neurotransmitters

  1. Approximately 90% of serotonin, a neurotransmitter crucial for mood regulation, is produced in the gut.
  2. Gut bacteria help synthesise neurotransmitters such as dopamine, GABA, and norepinephrine, which are essential for mood, anxiety, and cognitive function.

A healthy gut can enhance mental well-being, while an unhealthy gut may contribute to conditions like depression and anxiety.
